Mercedes Announces 2012 E-Class AMG Wagon

Technology News - On Thursday, Mercedes officials confirmed the presence of the 2012 E63 AMG wagon in the North American lineup. Coming in October, AMG’s version of this people and grocery-getter will get a biturbo 5.5-liter V8 that features direct injection with 518 horsepower and practically the same amount of torque. If that kind of output is too weak for a prospective customer, Mercedes dealers will happily provide a higher-performance package that will provide 550 horsepower and almost 600 lb-ft. of torque.

As with the E-Class sedan, the AMG wagon will have efficiency-improving start-stop technology in conjunction with a 7-speed transmission. 19-inch wheels are standard, but only the wagon will have a panoramic roof as standard.

The decision to reinstate the wagon in the North American lineup is likely due to the fact that Mercedes wagons engender a lot of loyalty from its owners, who are among the wealthier customers in the Mercedes demographic. [source]

Contour Launches First Broadcast Camera

Technology News - Hands-free camera maker, Contour has launched its first camera for the broadcast and professional market, the Contour+. The product, which shoots 1080p video, offers a number of video and audio enhancements over the company's other hands-free, wireless cameras and was designed to be particularly appealing for action sports, documentaries, films and broadcast.

"Nowhere on Earth is off limits to filmmakers and other visual storytellers, but there are plenty of places standard pro cameras can't go," noted Marc Barros, Contour CEO in a statement. "Contour+ delivers high-quality video, audio, location data and streaming capabilities anywhere there's a story to tell....We've created the most affordable way to give prosumers, broadcast and filmmakers everything they need to tell incredibly rich stories from right within the action."

The product offers a professional quality six-element glass lens for 1080p video quality, an adjustable white balance and a 170-degree field of view to help integrate peripherals and backdrops in each shot.

Steaming video capabilities via HDMI and an external transmitter allows users to broadcast live action.

For audio, Contour+ has an external 2.5mm microphone jack that the company is billing as a first on "any hands-free camera."

Additional capabilities include built-in Bluetooth capabilities so it can be connected to a mobile phone, which can then act as a wireless viewfinder to check the angle during productions; an HDMI port that allows instant replay on a laptop or widescreen direct from the included microSD card; the ability to shoot in three resolutions and four frame rates; and an internal interactive GPS receiver to track speed, location, and elevation at four frames per second.

"Hands-free is a big revolution in the camera space, but we haven't had anything that was progressive enough to use on professional shoots until now," noted film producer and Freeride Entertainment Director, Derek Westerlund in a statement. "The Contour+ allows me to capture great POV shots and will help bring the movie's story to life." [source]

Are you ready for 3D computers? New Microsoft UI patent

Technology News - Microsoft last month got approval for a patent on a three-dimensional user interface (PDF). And it’s different from the “multi-dimensional desktop” patent (PDF) for which Apple applied four years ago.

Apple’s proposed 3D desktop essentially just gives perceived depth to the UI we all know now. Diagrams in the patent application show a theoretical display as if it were a shallow box, with a backing and sides extending inward from the edges of a computer screen.

The signature Mac OS X dock, where users can place shortcuts, goes in the foreground; other icons can stack up from near to far; items can be pinned to the “walls”; and windows can pop up in the foreground or background, and wrap around the sides. It’s easier to visualize if you see Apple’s diagrams.

But Microsoft, according to its new patent (granted April 5), is thinking more in terms of three-dimensional environment than just 3D icons. Microsoft’s multi-dimensional workspace extends much deeper behind the computer screen, creating a virtual office the user can “walk” through, and separating different tasks into “rooms” among which the user can switch.
Patent figures

These diagrams from Microsoft's patent show a 3D space extending from the computer display away from the user (Fig. 2) and a theoretical illustration of that space from a different angle (Fig. 3).

When the first user interfaces were being developed, designers used the metaphor of a virtual desktop – that’s why we have familiar computer terms such as files, folders, desktops and so on. Microsoft’s proposed 3D UI appears to run with that metaphor, creating what really seems to be a virtual office.

In fact, Microsoft’s patent diagrams visualize the 3D space as if the user were walking through it, like a first-person shooter video game. Some of the figures show a virtual hand that pops up in the foreground, sometimes holding a palette with different icons and sometimes holding a computer menu.

“The user may move through the task gallery using a pointing devices to indicated the direction and duration of each movement,” the patent explains. “To facilitate such movement, the task gallery is divided into rooms with one or more user positions within each room.”
Patent figures

Microsoft visualized the 3D space as if the user could walk through it (Fig. 16). The smaller diagrams (Figs. 8A to 10B) show how computer windows would move in perspective.
Patent figures

Some figures show a first-person view in which a virtual hand pops up in the foreground.

Microsoft’s patent goes into great detail describing not only the user’s movement through 3D space, but how the user can move files, folders, windows and menus. It’s a fascinating read if you’ve got some time on your hands. (Download the PDF.)

The whole concept reminds me of 3D chat rooms or first-person shooters. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft incorporated its new Kinect motion sensor for Xbox 360, making the UI even more immersive.

Man, it seems like we just keep getting closer and closer to a real-life “Star Trek” holodeck. [source]

3D Printer Prepared To 25 Years Ahead

Technology News - WHAT can imagine if there is 3D printer? If all this still-format printer 2D, then soon you can use this 3D printer.

Rajeev Kulkarni, vice president of global systems in the company 3D Systems in the near future to explain the consumer can print from a 3D printer engine.

Rock Hill, SC is the pioneer of 3D printer-based 3D print manufacturing industry. Today was encouraging the development of the 3D industry. Steps to be taken later to the 3D printer 3D printing machine 25 years into the future.

The company recently partnered with software maker Autodesk (ADSK), and Alibre, to create a printing kit. The price is also quite cheap, ranging from U.S. $ 1,500, which can be used at home.

Wohlers Associates, an independent consulting firm has tracked the evolution of this 3D printer, and agree that 3D printing industry could grow from U.S. $ 1.3 billion in 2010 to $ 5.2 billion in 2020.

Meanwhile, scientists Grant Schindler of Georgia Tech have built a tool for fans of 3D waves at home. Recently he released an iPhone application that allows users untukmemindai and print their faces at home fabrication machines.

He is pessimistic if the 3D printer can be a favorite among the public. ''It's more like 10 years ago, before the printer actually exist. So need an application that can kill a rival, before all the people want a 3D printer,''he said. [Source]
